King Alaungphaya’s gold-plated letter to King George II of England

1757 က အင်္ဂလန် ဘုရင်ထံ ပေးပို့ခဲ့သည့် အလောင်းမင်းတရား၏ ရွှေစာချွန်တော်

The most meritorious and outstanding King Alaungphaya, lord of all the umbrella-covered rulers in the royal cities of Myanma (Burmese), the Shan, the Yuan (Northern Thais), the Manipuri and the Talaing (Mon) in the countries of Sunaparanta, Tambadipa and Kamboza , Lord of the ruby, gold, silver, copper, iron, amber and precious stone mines, lord of the white, red and pied elephants, lord of the golden chakra lance, descendant of the sun clan, lord of the golden palace, ruler over the royal city of Ratanapura-Ava and the golden city of Ratanasingha-Konbaung, famous as Ayudschapura, send their kindest regards to the English king who rules over the English capital surrounded by cities such as Chenapattam, Bengal, Fort St David and Devikot.

Under the government of our ancestors, the English and Myanma did as much trade as they wanted. As luck would have it, as a result of the unrest in the land of the Talaing, trade was interrupted at a time when Her Royal Highness Mr. Henry Brooke sent to Mawdin-Haingyi (Cape Negrais) to settle at the most distant point of our kingdom . We found out about this after his arrival and we are happy about it with regard to a friendly relationship, which is one of the seven characteristics of a fortified city in the hands of a sovereign ruler.

Accepting the humble request of Your Highness Envoy, Mr. Henry Brooke, we have granted the landing place for your ships in Pathein where he wanted it. The royal order certified with my seal was sent to the officer of the English king and the governor of Pathein was commissioned to hand over the land in Pathein. When there is close friendship between kings of different countries, they can assist one another when necessary, as we are anxious to do.

In order for our friendship to continue into the time of our sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as the descendants of the esteemed English king, we wrote this royal letter on a gold leaf on the tenth day of the rising moon of the month of Kason of the Sakkaraj year 1118, a Saturday , Your esteemed Highness, the English King who rules the English capital.
